Cricket-Kapil's 175 best ODI innings ever: Gavaskar
[ Source:search.rediff.com ]

Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar [Images] on Tuesday described Kapil Dev's [Images] unbeaten 175-run knock against Zimbabwe during India's successful 1983 World Cup campaign as the "best one-day innings" ever.
Gavaskar recalled that it was a match that India had to win to enter the semi-final.
"When you had lost half of your side with less than 20 runs on the board, obviously it was not looking good. But this gentleman (Kapil Dev) went out and played his innings...best innings I had seen in limited overs international.
"That 175 has to be in my view the greatest knock in the World Cup," Gavaskar said while speaking at a media meet, arranged by the UB Group.
The UB Group would host a gala dinner for the 1983 World Cup winning team in London [Images] on June 25 to mark the 25th anniversary of the historic triumph.
Kapil Dev said captaining the 1983 side was not difficult as everybody was playing well at the time.
He said even after he took that famous catch of Vivian Richards off Madan Lal, the final match was still open as Clive Lloyd [Images] was still at the crease.
"Lloyd was the most dangerous player", Kapil Dev said. But Gavaskar insisted it was that catch indeed which took India to the last-four stage of the elite event.
"Kapil's 175 got us into semi-final...that catch (Richards) got us the final."

Cricket-Sachin star attraction at Rahul Gandhi's T20
[ Source:www.rediff.com ]

It may not have had the glitz or glamour, or the prize money for that matter, that was on display at Navi Mumbai's D Y Patil stadium on Sunday, but Amethi's own T20 finals on Monday, brainchild of Congress member of Parliament Rahul Gandhi, was a hit by any countryside yardstick.
The Gandhis' fascination for cricket is well-known, with Rahul, with sister Priyanka and hubby Robert Vadra often seen at various India fixtures. This time round, the cricketing fraternity repaid the compliment with maestro Sachin Tendulkar, along with youngsters Rudra Pratap Singh and Pankaj Singh, attending the final at the B R Ambedkar stadium in Amethi. A new attendee this time was 7-year-old Rehan Vadra sporting a Kolkata Knight Riders Tee, watching the final seated between his parents.
Monday's final saw Tiloi and Sangrampur clash, with the latter walking away with the prize money of Rs 3 lakh plus trophy, given out by Tendulkar. Runner-up Tiloi won Rs 1.5 lakh and a trophy, given out by Robert Vadra. Nilesh Kumar was presented the man of the match award by R P Singh. Rahul Gandhi gave away Rs 60,000 each to the losing semi-finalists. For the record, Sangrampur smashed 126, aided by six sixes and 10 fours, and Tiloi fell short by 64 runs.

Cricket-Yusuf Pathan, Ojha new faces in ODI squad
[ Source:im.rediff.com ]

All-rounder Yusuf Pathan and young left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha were on Friday rewarded for their good showing in the Indian Premier League [Images] as the selectors announced a young 15-member squad for the forthcoming tri-series in Bangladesh and the Asia Cup in Pakistan.
Apart from the two new faces, the selection panel headed by Dilip Vengsarkar recalled seamer R P Singh who replaced Munaf Patel [Images], a member of the squad that won the tri-series in Australia earlier this year.
Besides Patel, the selectors dropped Manoj Tiwary and Dinesh Karthik [Images] while ignoring former captains Sourav Ganguly [Images] and Rahul Dravid [Images] once again.
Sachin Tendulkar [Images] has made himself unavailable for the two assignments as he has not recovered fully from his prolonged groin injury.
The other senior member of the side, off-spinner Harbhajan Singh [Images] also missed out on a berth in the squad as he has been banned for five one-dayers after being found guilty of slapping national teammate S Sreesanth [Images] during an IPL match last month.

IPL(23)- Fearsome four's road to semi-finals

Cricket-Yusuf, RP Singh may get a look in
[ Source:cricket.timesofindia.indiatimes.com ]

MUMBAI: The overwhelming success of the Indian Premier League may have thrown up some promising cricketers. Yet, when the five wise men of Indian cricket get into a huddle on Friday to pick the team for the forthcoming tri-series in Bangladesh and the Asia Cup in Pakistan, they are likely to repose faith in Mahendra Singh Dhoni's young Indian team that stunned World Cup champions Australia in the Commonwealth Bank Series early this year.
That would not only be a huge vote of confidence for Dhoni's team but it would also ensure continuity. Of course, with Sachin Tendulkar ruling himself out due to injury and Harbhajan Singh out of reckoning - courtesy his five-match ban sentence - there would be two spots up for the grabs.
Going by the mood of the selectors on the eve of the selection committee meeting, they appear keen to bring in the explosive Yusuf Pathan and pick a replacement for Harbhajan which could either be a spinner or a medium-pacer. Yusuf Pathan, who made his Twenty20 debut in the World Cup final, has been scoring consistently at the domestic level for Baroda. That apart, he has continued his sizzling form to dish out a few match-winning performances for Team Jaipur. That he is an excellent fielder and can bowl off-spin further enhances his CV.
It will be interesting to see whether the selectors bring in an extra spinner to replace Harbhajan or whether they show faith in a medium pacer. With Piyush Chawla doing a great job, Delhi leggie Amit Mishra will have to wait. As much can be said about left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha who still has some way to go before he meets the demands of international cricket.
Then again, left-arm pacer RP Singh - who missed the tri-series Down Under due to injury - ought to be a hot favourite to make a comeback. The Uttar Pradesh pacer has been pretty impressive and consistent in the last two years. Robin Uthappa has been a huge disappointment for Mumbai Indians in the IPL, but his fine showing in the One-day series in England and Australia would serve as grace marks for him to retain his place. Effectively it means that the likes of Shikhar Dhawan and Swapnil Asnodkar might well be ignored.
Likely Team: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Robin Uthappa, Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma, Yusuf Pathan, Suresh Raina, Dinesh Kaarthick, Ishant Sharma, Irfan Pathan, Piyush Chawla, RP Singh, Sree Santh and Praveen Kumar. |

IPL(21)-Mumbai sign off with a win
[ Source:www.rediff.com ]

The semifinal door had already been slammed on them but Mumbai Indians [Images] at least had the consolation of signing off with a win as they spanked Bangalore Royal Challengers [Images] by nine wickets in an inconsequential rain-truncated match in Bangalore on Wednesday.
Chasing 123 to win from 18 overs, the Mumbai side cruised to 126 for one in 16 overs with Sanath Jayasuriya (54) and Sachin Tendulkar [Images] (40 not out) scoring bulk of the runs.
Earlier, Dilhara Fernando (4-18) mowed down the Bangalore top order while Dwayne Smith (3-26) wrecked the middle as Mumbai Indians restricted the hosts to a meagre 122 for nine in 18 overs. |

IPL(20)-Punjab win by 41 runs against Rajasthan
[ Source:ipl.timesofindia.indiatimes.com ]

MOHALI, PTI: Shaun Marsh smashed a mesmerizing century to lead Kings XI Punjab to a convincing 41-run victory against Rajasthan Royals in their inconsequential IPL encounter at PCA stadium on Wednesday.
Put in to bat, the Punjab team, riding on Marsh's 115-run knock reached a massive 221 for three and then restricted the visitors to 180 for seven in their quota of 20 overs.
Young leg spinner Piyush Chawla was the most successful bowler for the hosts with brilliant figures of 4-0-35-3.
Niraj Patel (57) and Yousuf Pathan (39) did their best for the Royals but their effort was not enough to overhaul the big target.
Though both the teams have already made the semi-final grade, which made the match inconsequential yet the Punjab team enter the knockout stage with the momentum. (PTI Photo)
